Canon PowerShot SX40 HS 12.1 Megapixel Bridge Camera - Black 5251B001 31. What's in the Box: PowerShot SX40 HS Body, Battery Pack NB-10L, Battery Charger CB-2LC, Lens Cap, Case for Hot Shoe Cap, Neck Strap NS-DC11, Interface Cable IFC-400PCU, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM.
This is probably as close to SLR camera as you can get, but obviously more compact and easier to handle. We bought it right before vacation to Italy. Especially was inpressed with nighttime pictures. Some came out really fantastic. It took a bit of practice. However one dissapointment was Sports/motion mode. All attempts to get good shots at my son in the go-cart were not so good. It shoots really good HD movies and perhaps next time maybe won't even bring our camcorder along. Everything in one is good and does not take much space. Factory battery life is not so bad. I read some reviews of others buing a spare battery, but I really don't see a need unless you go places where you would not have a chance to charge. Battery charges quite quickly, in less than an hour. Don't be fooled by low MP on it, with the optical zoom available and a pretty descent size lense, you really don't need more unless you plan to do big posters or something like this. I was really debating between this one and EOS Rebel when shopping, but I think spending quite less and getting all great features in more compact size was a good choice.
My husband and I are amateur birders and were looking for a camera with very strong telezoom that is still light enough to carry on our field trips.

After some research, two cameras became the top contenders: Canon SX40 and Nikon P510. We took each of them out into the field for one day and also did some head-to-head comparison shots under realistic conditions. The SX40 was the clear winner of the contest. Our review is based on the performance for our particular purpose, but will likely apply to anyone that will use the max zoom frequently. If looking for a general purpose camera, neither of the two is a good choice. A 30+ zoom involves technical compromises that will render these models inferior to others under more typical conditions.

Here are the details:

- Auto focus: Focusing with an 800mm + lens is a challenge for any camera. One should expect that depending on the exact circumstances focusing may take a few seconds and sometimes fails altogether. Given that, both models performed surprisingly well. However, the SX40 somewhat outperformed the P510 in speed and reliability. This is an important factor for us, as birds often do not wait for us zooming in on them.

- Image quality: At the same zoom level, the SX40 has a noticeably sharper image. The P510 suffers from being "over-pixeled" with its 16MP sensor. Compared to the SX40 the pictures are visibly noisy. Contrast and color rendering of the SX40 are also superior.

- Long zoom: The P510 has a longer zoom, up to 1000 35mm equivalent vs. 840 for the SX40. Here is the bad news: If you take a picture at 840mm with P510 and crop to what it would be at 1000mm, you get a higher quality picture compared to a picture taken at 1000mm. In short the optical zoom is inferior to a digital zoom, and it is shockingly obvious. As mentioned, the 840mm picture is still worse than the SX40 picture at the its max zoom level. This was really the deciding factor for us.

- Weight and size: The P510 is a bit smaller and noticeably lighter than the SX40. Not enough to really matter for us, but it could be relevant for some people.

- Somewhat minor, but a bit annoying: The design of SX40 lens cover is poor: Hard to put on, easy to fall off.

Summary: Both cameras are good choices if you are looking for an easy to carry camera that lets you zoom up to near 1000mm and take reasonably sharp picture without a tripod. Given that this was beyond laughable just a few years ago, it is difficult to be to harsh with either model. However, the SX40 clearly outperforms the P510 in image quality. We love it!
I really wanted to like this camera. The zoom is amazing and image quality on still subjects is excellent. The lighting comes out balanced and natural in most shots without the flash. However, this camera cannot focus on a moving object to save its life. About 8 out of 10 shots come out blurry, which is unacceptable. Unless you are outdoors in decent lighting, the auto focus spends a long time fishing and is often not able to focus at all from the mid to long-zoom ranges. The manual focus option doesn't seem to work very well and the wheel selector is tedious and impractical. I had read so many excellent reviews on this camera. I don't know if they're from people that work for Canon or what, but they are undeserved. This camera was a disappointment. I will be returning.
I am so pleased with my Canon SX40HS. It has met and exceeded my expectations. I shoot a lot of landscapes and it creates clear crisply focused images. If you use the SCN setting you get clarity throughout the photo from foreground to the deepest reaches of the photo. Color is great. It makes very good HDR images... that is how I edit most of my photos. Portraits are very crisp with excellent detail. I shoot it almost every day. I participate on an online social media website which displays people's photos and mine rate up there with the best of them!
Does not take very stable pictures its shaky when I take them. Has a long shutter lag. Wish there was online video instructions that teaches you tips and tricks in how to get the most of your camera to take creative pictures. The zoom isn't all that great.
I am by no means an expert. When looking for a camera I was looking for something in between a point and shoot and a DSLR. This is the perfect bridge camera. It is easy to use with so many cool features. The zoom is absolutely amazing and picture quality is great!
GREAT camera, my only complaint is the digital screen opening to the side, takes a little practice with the screen off to the left. bought the 32GB memory card. like I said GREAT CAMERA, still learning all the functions.
The camera is amazing! It takes amazing pictures and has a powerful zoom. The battery life is good. The only downside is that it doesn't come with a memory card, but that can be taken care of at Wal Mart for ten dollars.
